Edmonton is full of hidden gems and scenic spots that make for incredible photoshoots, whether you’re capturing engagement portraits, family moments, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature. Here are my top 5 favourite places to shoot in the city—and why they’re perfect for photography. 1. Government House

Government House at 2845 102 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB T5N is one of Edmonton’s most elegant spots, combining historic architecture with surrounding greenery for the perfect mix of classic and natural backdrops. Parking is easy to find, making it a stress-free spot to meet clients.

One of the highlights here is the gravel path that winds down from the parking lot, surrounded by greenery—an intimate and natural setting that works beautifully for couple photos.

In the fall, the changing leaves bring a warm, cozy atmosphere, adding depth and richness to your shots. The combination of heritage and nature makes it a versatile spot—great for engagements, graduations, or family portraits.

2. Mactaggart Sanctuary

Mactaggart Sanctuary is one of my favourite spots in Edmonton for capturing natural beauty. With its dense forest, winding trails, and Whitemud Creek running through, it offers a peaceful backdrop year-round. Parking can be a little tough—especially in the afternoons of summer and fall. It’s also a popular spot, so don’t be surprised to see other photographers taking photos here.

Fall is when this spot truly shines. The tall grass creates a textured foreground, while layers of trees stretch into the background, giving photos depth and warmth.

There are also large stones close to the newly constructed bridge, which work beautifully for posing group or family photos and add variety to your shots.

The sanctuary is one of the rare places that’s equally interesting in winter, offering a serene and moody atmosphere. And of course, the small bridge is always a fun element to interact with, adding charm to both couple and family sessions.

3. Queen Elizabeth Park

With its stunning river valley views, Queen Elizabeth Park is a photographer’s dream. The elevated location offers sweeping panoramas of downtown Edmonton, making it one of the best places for city skyline shots. I usually shoot on the western side of the park, where there’s a good mix of greenery and open space that creates the perfect backdrop for portraits—and it’s also a great spot to have the famous Walterdale Bridge’s arch in the background.

Parking can be tricky when the park gets busy—you’ll find stalls on both the east and west sides, with the east side offering more spots. My favourite time to shoot here is in the afternoon, when the light softens and the surroundings are beautifully illuminated without harsh shadows.

The park also has a few tucked-away benches surrounded by trees, which make for intimate and natural couple photos. And if clients are up for a short walk, you can head down to the Walterdale Bridge for some striking waterfront shots—it only takes about five minutes of walking and adds a whole new dimension to the session.

4. Mill Creek Ravine Park

For a rustic, natural vibe, Mill Creek Ravine is a go-to. Combined with the flowing creek and tall trees, the ravine creates a backdrop that feels both adventurous and intimate. The wooden bridges not only add charm but also provide high vantage points, making it possible to capture unique bird’s-eye view shots.

It’s especially beautiful in the spring when the greenery comes alive, or in the fall when the entire ravine is filled with warm tones. The winding paths also give opportunities for candid, walk-and-talk style shots that feel natural and authentic.

5. Hermitage Park

Hermitage Park is a little more off the beaten path, which makes it a hidden gem for photoshoots. The park features a large pond, wooded areas, and plenty of open space to play with. It’s a peaceful setting for family shoots, pet photography, or romantic sessions.

In the fall, the reflection of colorful trees in the water makes for striking, mirror-like photos. It’s also less busy than some other parks, so you can enjoy a more private session.
